Donruss: Classics
My Donruss: Classics Collection (Updated December 24th, 2022)
2001 Donruss Classics: “Brian Allen” #144 RC
2001 Donruss Classics: “Edgerrin James” Hashmarks #HM12
As I said on the Donruss page, I love Donruss. They started off well in 1996 with their inaugural set and it has continued today. In 2001, when the Donruss Classics hit the hobby, they did it with style. The 2001 Donruss Classics set is still one of my All-Time Favorite Master sets. Please visit that page for more info, but essentially it means, between the base set and all insert sets it offered, the 2001 Donruss Classics set is truly that, a Classic!! The base set in 2001, had 3 tiers, not the way the 1999 Fleer Flair Showcase thinks tiers should be, (See the 1999 Fleer Flair Showcase for more on that). The 2001 set had Veteran cards, Rookies cards, and lastly Legends, (See the 2001 Donruss Classics "Brian Allen" #144 RC top left). Donruss literally thought of everything when it released the 2001 set.
In addition to the 3-tiers of base cards in its 2001 set, Donruss added a plethora of unique insert cards that really livened up the release. With additions such as the Hashmarks, Stadium Stars and Team Colors inserts the 2001 Donruss Classics set was stocked with cards destined to retain their value and make a lasting impression on the hobby, (See the 2001 Donruss Classics “Edgerrin James” Hashmarks #HM12, below left) the (2001 Donruss Classics “Corey Dillon” Stadium Stars #SS22 below) and the (2001 Donruss Classics “Warren Moon” Team Colors #TC25 right), these three insert sets offer a wide range of memorabilia instead of 3 different jersey sets that most sets offer.
In addition to those 3 impressive insert memorabilia sets, Donruss offered a variation to those sets. And when I say variation, I don't mean the same set with

a Gold Border, (Another of my card industry pet peeves), Donruss did it the right way, they added Autograph versions for a pre-determined select # of cards for each of the hashmarks, Stadium Stars and Team Colors insert sets, (See the 2001Donruss Classics “Daryl Johnston” Team Colors Autographs #TC34 bottom right). How do you make these insert sets better, add autographs to them. Bravo, Donruss!!
In Closing, since I have decided to continue collecting past 2003, I'll definitely continue collecting Donruss. I have yet to be disappointed with anything they've offered.
