1995 Collector’s Edge Excalibur: “Jake Reed” #46
1995 Collector’s Edge Excalibur: “Bam Morris” EdgeTech #12
I have no idea what gave Collector's Edge the idea of combining Football Card Collecting with the Dragon Slayer / Merlin era, (See the 1995 Excalibur Jake Reed #46 3rd top left). I know all the '95 card shows is a sword, but on some other cards Collector's Edge goes as far as showing a knight or a dragon's tail, (See the 1997 Collector's Edge Excalibur "Garrison Hearst" #131 top right). Does anyone have a clue why Collector's Edge did this? I would've loved to have been in the boardroom when that design concept came up.
I don't think the Excalibur series was the brightest marketing idea to come along in the hobby. Outside of the 1997 Excalibur Game Helmet Insert set, (See the 1997 CE Excalibur "Jamal Anderson" Game Helmets card #26 below), I really didn't have too much interest in the Excalibur series. Again, I don't really know who was in charge of the art design group at Collector's Edge, but one has to wonder where they got their ideas. I really hate to make it sound as if I'm picking on Collector's Edge, but they own 5 of the top 10 spots on my Least Favorite Sets page. That's pretty telling, (See My Least Favorite Sets page). And the 1995 insert set called "EdgeTech" owns the #1 spot, (See the 1995 Collector's Edge Excalibur "Bam Morris" EdgeTech #12 left), that card is absolutely horrible. When I look at the hobby landscape and notice that Collector's Edge is no longer with us, I have no doubts about why.
